Making Memories

A good friend of mine is getting married very soon and I won't be able to attend his wedding due to work commitment.  I wanted to create a small memento that would be meaningful to him and special to her.  As I love altering items, this is when  I gave a new lease of life to a simple diskette box.  I made a mini album to fit the box, with space in the box to spare for them to keep additional notes or photos.

For this project, I hunted down all the remainder stock of Je T'adore in Singapore and used a total of three 12x12 papers from the Je T'adore paper - Tres Jolie Collage , French Dictionary and Floral Ledger and the brads and accoutrement pack.  Je T'adore is such a gorgeous collection.  The box was covered with French Dictionary trellis pattern paper on the sides,  with Tres Jolie paper in front.  The mini's pages are made from a single sheet of Floral Ledger paper and the covers from Tres Jolie paper.

In any project, a slight alteration can make a big difference in the end results.  I will share a few from this project over here.



1) The box is upcycled from an old diskette box, covered in double sided patterned paper. As the box is transclucent, you can see the pattern inside and the other pattern outside.

2) This pair of kissing swallows are from the Je T'adore accoutrement pack. They are originally light pale pink and I covered them in a thin layer of bronze crackle paint.  After the crackle dried, it broke nicely to show the pale pink under the bronze, giving it a bit of the vintage look.




3) Don't be afraid to mix and match. I have here 3 types of roses - a brad, a resin flatback and a paper rose.  See how well they go together?

4) Use words on patterened paper as highlights by boxing them or matting them.  This was from a phrase in the French Dictionary paper.

5) Give dimension to your fussy paper cuttings by painting them with a layer of glitter glue and distressing and curling the edges of the cut.

Guest Designer Jasmine Ford

We are excited to have Jasmine Ford as Making Memories' guest blog designer for the day. I hope you love the fall project that she created to share with us. Below Jasmine shared how she created this project.

I decided to do a home decor project for Fall, since it's right around the corner and is my favorite time of the year. I used a straw wreath and wrapped it with ribbon first and then with yarn in a coordinating color to my chosen papers. I then wrapped the thin brown ribbon on it that I got in a Making Memories Vintage Findings Mini Fall kit and applied the sequins in between that also came from the same kit.

I used my Slice machine to cut all the leaves out in assorted sizes using the Vintage Findings, Remember This and Basics/Seasons cards. The papers used are from the Just Chillin Girls line (pale orange and brown wood grain), and the acetate, green with cream polka dots and the beige patterned all came in a pack when I got my Slice. I also used some dryer sheets that I cut and sprayed with mists. I cut all my shapes out, sprayed them with water and mists, then crumpled them, dried them, inked them with Distress Inks, and then started layering my shapes and the beaded twigs where I wanted them. Once I had it arranged, I started gluing everything down with hot glue. I love the way it turned out and can't wait to hang it up with the rest of my Fall decorations!

 

 

Guest Designer Caroline Inkpen

Today it is Caroline Inkpen’s chance to shine as a guest designer on the Making Memories’ blog. Caroline created a pretty banner using the Slice. Caroline explains how she created this banner.

To make the base cards, I cut a 4" flower and its layer from the Dilly Dally design card in beige and pink cardstock. Then, I punched holes for the ribbons at this point so I knew where not to cover with the embellishments. I cut the letters spelling "sister" using Making Memories’ Panorama collection and the Dilly Dally design card at 2” and attached them using a dimensional adhesive.

Next, I went through my Slice design cards to find words that begin with the relevant letter and fit with the sister theme. I ended up using the following design cards:

• Big Kids
• Dilly Dally
• Remember This
• Vintage Findings

I created my own embellishments using the Making Memories’ Panorama collection and the Dilly Dally design card and finished them up with gems and brads from Making Memories’ Pitter Patter collection.

I love making my own embellishments and a couple of my favorite embellishments are flowers and butterflies.  To recreate the large layered flowers on this layout I used a 5-petal flower on the Basic Shapes 2 Design Card.  I cut six flowers from cardstock and used 3 for each flower.  I then misted them with water, crumpled them up and then uncrumpled and let them dry.  After they dried, I pinched and twisted the end of each petal. I then adhered them together with Therm O Web Zots offsetting the petals.  Ink the edges and adhere to your layout with Zots. The butterflies were created by cutting one size smaller, than the larger and then layering together.  I folded them in half and then adhered to my layout using Zots at the fold.  This gives your butterflies the appearance of movement as if they just landed on your layout.
 
The leaves were created using the Think Pink Design Card. To give them dimension, I folded the leaves and then used small Zots to adhere them around the flowers.
 
Designer Tip:  To give your layouts dimension try layering several die cuts. 

 

 

Guest Designer Melissa Thiede

How about some card inspiration for today? Melissa Thiede is Making Memories' guest designer for today. Pull out your favorite papers to create this card for yourself (or for someone you love). Meslissa explains how she created this card.

I love thinking outside the box, and so using the Making Memories packaging tape and turning into patterned paper was exactly what I did.

I started with a white standard A2 size card base, and adhered a piece of pink card stock (1 3/4 x 4 1/4) to the bottom half.

Next I added the blue card stock (2 3/4 x 4 1/4) to the center portion and added some zig zag stitching with my sewing machine.

The chipboard flourish is from Making Memories jigsaw shapes and flowers which I painted in a chocolate color.

To make the flowers I used the packaging tape and covered two 3 x 3 pieces of scrap cardstock which I then die cut with my die cutting machine.

I finished this card off by adding the brown buttons, ribbon and sentiment.

 

Today’s Guest Designer – Aimee Matteucci

Hi. It's Aimee Matteucci. When I got word I’d be a guest designer, I went right out to get some new Making Memories stuff. I found a few of my favorite pieces that inspired me. I also went digging through my studio for Making Memories product.  I was amazed at all the stuff I’d hoarded through the years!  I couldn’t decide on one project so I made two.  Here’s what I ended up with:

I’ve had these frames forever and finally had a spark of an idea.  I made this for my daughter, who’s very attached to her old dog, and vice versa.  Design tip:  color your metal embellishments with alcohol inks to coordinate with your papers.

MM supplies:  metal frames (year unknown), {note}worthy Addie Brocade Dot paper (2007), maroon flourish under title was cut from a page in the {note}worthy Spiral Journaling Book (2007), Paper Reverie Shimmer Alpha in brown (2010), pearl hearts are from Gem Collection – Brown (2009)

 
MM supplies:  most of the patterned papers are from Je t’adore collection (2010), with NW Addie Diecut Flower (2007) pp under the title.  I used a page from the Lovestruck Spiral Journaling Notebook (2010) for the heart shaped journaling area with Vine Cream cardstock (2004) layered over that – inked to show detail- and edged with scallop scissors.

Title alpha – Ready to Glitter/Alpha Classic (2006) was dusted with PearlEx in Antique Silver; Vintage Hip Trinket Pin (2005); Metal Hearts (year unknown) with eyelet backs, attached with a MM mini hammer; MM paper piercer was used to attach hemp cord along banner.
 

Guest Designer Milena Romaniuk

Hi. I'm Milena Romaniuk. When I was offered the opportunity to be a guest blogger on Making Memories' blog I was so excited! Making Memories has been my very favorite scrapbooking company ever since I started this hobby!

I knew exactly which papers I would use for my project, but not what to make that would be special enough to deserve this honor. I made a couple of cards and a layout but they weren't good enough, until I thought to make an altered book for my upcoming "photo adventure" with a friend. Making a scrapbook ahead of time, so that all that's left to do is add pictures, is definitely not a new idea, but it is new to me. I usually put off scrapping something and then eventually forget about it, but this way I have no excuse- as long as I print the pictures!

I used lots of Making Memories products from the following collections: Vintage Findings, Passport, Flea Market and even some papers from Spook Alley.

Guest Designer Allison Landy

Today Allison Landy is Makign Memories’ guest designer.

Allison created a layout using some older Making Memories' products that she found in her scrapbook stash.

I'm a bit of a collector when it comes to travel themed scrapbook lines. Lucky for me, Making Memories has created some of the greatest travel lines ever, and I buy every, single, one of them. Even more exciting is that the lines play well together. So, when I was asked to guest blog, I knew exactly what I was going to grab. My daughter and I took a trip to Costa Rica for her 18th birthday back in 2010, and I still have plenty of photos to get into an album. To create the layout, I mixed and matched some of the Panorama and Great Escape product lines, cutting the papers into strips and layering them. I love the eclectic look of the paler and bolder colors all mixed together. 

I then started adding more dimensional embellishments like the brads. Journaling always comes last in my process, and I often end up not sure where I want to write when I have more to say than I have room. I find that a great solution is to frame the layout with journaling. Not only do I get to say all that want to, I also give the layout a nice, finishing touch.

With summer nearing its end, isn't it time to start scrapping all those vacation memories you just finished creating?

Guest Designer Rachel Theall

We are happy to have Rachel Theall as Making Memories’ guest designer for the day. Rachel created a layout based on her favorite TV show – Survivor.

 I am a huge fan of the show Survivor and was very excited last fall to meet three more of the contestants at the pumpkin patch near my house.  I thought it would be a great source of inspiration for the layout that I’m sharing today.

To create the page, I cut two wedges off the Panorama die-cut paper and put the larger wedge at the top and the smaller at the bottom.  I wanted my page to reflect the fun and world travel that Survivor contests experience, so I cut two blue circles and airplanes to circle them, and placed those between the die-cut pieces.  I needed a place to put the title so I created a ribbon like banner across the top with the kinds of things - stamps and tickes - that you might get if you had been to exotic places layered around the title and photo.  This page mixes a number of Making Memories products including embellishments from Noel.  I enjoyed making the page as much as the opportunity I had to meet the contestants.

Guest Designer Sheena Rowlands

We are excited to have Sheena Rowlands as Making Memories guest designer. Sheena provided some fantastic inspirational pieces for you to enjoy. Sheena explains how she created each one.

For this layout I wanted to show that pink is not just for girls! I adore the 5th Avenue flocked paper so I handcut each circle to create a border along my layout.

Last summer we went on our first cruise and this photo has been waiting on my desk for the right layout. I mixed up various Making Memories papers (I believe I used six or seven different ones) to create the right look. I am a great fan of hand cutting designs from patterned paper to use on my pages and using punches to add decorative edges to complete the look.
