Today we asked Jill Schwartz, designer of Making Memories Vintage Groove Collection, what inspires her. What an amazing woman:
So what inspires me you ask? Many things, many, many!!!! I love things, I can't tell you how often I get excited by the tiniest little thing. Looking in an Antique market or a store can often be just as exciting as an art museum for me. Good design thrills me whether modern or vintage. It could be a small ribbon or a color palette that glares at me from a poster or an ad. Great paint on an old truck or antique item, the way colors in nature play off each other.
If I get inspired by an object. The object I get fascinated with often affects my seeing. Being inspired is a thrilling body mind experience. It may seem a funny thing to call it that but inspiration is like a deep emotion that gets under my skin and takes me to a new place. A new way of seeing. It has real energy. Music always helps accompany that feeling for me and if I'm working in my studio designing it is the music that can inspire me. It seems to take the edge off and allows me to effortlessly let things flow easier so that I become thoroughly engrossed in the process rather than the thought. It helps to take your conscious mind out of the process.
I get thoroughly inspired when I see something that uses a common object in the most unique way and one it was not intended for.
Traveling, which I do often, also is thoroughly inspiring... Seeing a new city, a sculpture park, a gorgeous building can easily inspire. Take for instance Chelsea market, a NYC building and home of the original Oreo factory. A building that has kept its integrity of the old and added quirky, artistic touches, that make the place sing to me each and every time I go there. I loved it so much; it inspired me. I wanted to be part of that place and now each year at Christmas for 10 days I run a pop-up shop on the retail level. When things are done in unexpected ways I am delighted.
What do I do with inspiration? I shoot it so I can go back to a photograph and remember what brought me to that place.
What follows are a few images of things that have created this special feeling of inspiration.
