Happy Halloween

We at Making Memories would like to wish you all a Happy Halloween!  Like you, we’re excited to celebrate the holiday in the right way and that includes having our employees dress up for the occasion.  We’re excited to share those pictures with you, so stay tuned.

Until then, we’ll indulge you with these layouts from Laura Vegas and Wendy Anderson.  These are the final Making Memories' Spellbound layouts we have to show you, so hopefully you’ve had the chance to get some great ideas this month.  No doubt you’ll be taking plenty of photos of your little trick-or-treaters today, so here are some great ideas of how to scrapbook them.

Negative Space Challenge

Don’t you love the feeling of taking something negative and turning it into a positive?  If you do, you’re going to love today’s challenge -using the negative portion of an image on a layout. 

 
I used my Slice, with the Making Memories' Spellbound design card, to cut three images out of my photo – a gravestone and two bats. 

TIP: You can learn an easy technique for achieving perfect placement by watching this video.
 

After the images were cut out, I mounted my photo onto my layout with foam mounting squares because I wanted lots of dimension and even shadows on my page.  I replaced a portion of the gravestone (the letters), and I cut additional bats from the glittered paper to add to my page as well.

If you don’t have a Slice yet, you can still take my challenge – there are negative portions to lots of scrapbooking elements – die-cuts, stickers, chipboard, etc.  I can’t wait to see how YOU turn a negative into a positive and create a fun scrapbook page to showcase it!

Meet the Design Team

It’s time to meet a couple more members of our design team: Jennifer Pebbles and Laura Vegas.  We asked each of them one question that could help you get to know them a little better:

Jennifer Pebbles – What is your Favorite Smell?

I would have to say coconut! It has to be just coconut, though, not piña colada.
I have been wearing some form of coconut perfume since my college days, and my most recent is a body spray from Bath & Body Works. I think I like it because it reminds me of suntan lotion and long hot summers. Washington doesn’t get much in terms of sun.  The coconut keeps my mind on sunnier days, which comes in handy when it rains here almost 365 days a year.

Laura Vegas - I Believe In…

I believe in doing something creative every day. I believe in taking some time for yourself to do what makes you happy. I know that sometimes it's hard to find time in our already busy days. I have a family – my husband and my two girls – and I work full-time in my home as a daycare provider with lots of babies and toddlers to keep me busy. Evenings and weekends get filled with homework, soccer practices and games, church activities, housework and errands. Like most people, I have a lot on my plate at any given time, and sometimes I feel guilty for taking time to do my own thing.

But I have learned that it's essential to my well-being. Being cooped up in the house all week with daycare kids takes its toll on me, and I get super moody and cranky – ask anyone.  And as much as I love them all, the day-to-day task of taking care of kids doesn’t leave me feeling very accomplished at the end of the day. But if I can take some time here and there throughout my day to be creative, it makes me feel like I've done something productive. Whether I'm making a layout, editing photos, looking through magazines and idea books, organizing my studio or planning layouts, as long as I get the chance to do something creative everyday, I am a happier person!

Guest Designer Michele Beck

Today we are excited to feature Michele Beck as our guest designer.

Michele loves Making Memories product, but her favorite line is Noteworthy because of its “feminine and brilliant colors and chipboard.” She decided to use her favorite products for this aptly named layout, “Perfect.”

1 - First, she painted the background with Making Memories' Scrapbook Colors paint in white by drawing some circles to make clouds.

2 - Next she layered two pieces of Making Memories' Noteworthy paper, a photo and  a journaling paper (cut to make a circle) for the background.

3 - She distressed the edge of each paper along with the background.

4 - To make trees, Michele punched out flowers and little circles from the Making Memories' Noteworthy paper.

5 - Next, she layered Making Memories' Noteworthy chipboard, die-cuts, and brads on one of the trunks and stapled Making Memories Noteworthy trims under the photo.

6 - She added two Noteworthy pebbles brads on each side of the title and wrote her journaling on the clouds.

7 - Finally, she tied a Making Memories' Noteworthy trim on the edge of my page and added some shimmer to the trees and clouds.
