CHA Product Preview - Part I

Making Memories goes to three trades shows each year to release new product.  On the 28^th of this month we will be at CHA in Anaheim, California.  We are so excited about our new product release and wanted to give you a sneak peak.  Check back every Friday until then to get a peak into our new release.  On the 28^th we will give you more detail about the products so you can watch for them at your favorite scrapbook supply store.

 

Grommet Challenge

My favorite part about the new large grommets? The flower ones, of course, because they’re perfect for matching with photos of Harper. So my challenge to you this week is to get out your grommet tool and large grommets and have fun!

I experimented on this layout by mixing the flower grommets with the smaller circle grommets as well. The circles come in two sizes, 1/2” and 1” in diameter, which means you could also layer the smaller circles in the center of the larger circles, if you’d like. The grommet tool itself also comes with 2 large hold punches and 2 different size setters to correspond with both circle sizes. For my designs I used the smaller hole punch, then set the smaller flower grommet within the circle, and finally, backed the center of the flower with a different patterned paper for contrast. I used a few different embellishments and stickers to complete the cascade of flowers, then completed my page using tiny alphas, velvet sayings stickers for the title, and my own handwriting for the journaling.  Give it a try. Upload your pages to the MM idea gallery when you are finished.

ELLEN, OPRAH BIRTHDAY

In addition to hosting two of the country's most popular daytime talk shows, Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres have something else in common: they both celebrate birthdays in January.    Do you feel a contest coming on?  Why not show the cast and crew of both programs just how much fun we are having creating cards and scrapbook layouts by sending a flood of handmade birthday greetings to these two deserving talents.

Color Trends for 2007

Can you believe it’s 2007? Happy New Year! So…I have been thinking a lot about color because it’s part of my job.  I absolutely LOVE color! So have you been on the lookout for color trends for 07’? The MM design team took a few creative trips recently, one to the Portland area and the other was to San Francisco…I was looking at color!

Is brown the new black? I saw brown combined with so many colors...You know me I am a PINK girl...Is coral the new pink?

MM had great success with the Cosmo line.  Do you remember the pink/brown and blue/brown color combination in that line? Well those two combos are back.  The brown is the same yummy chocolate but the blues and pinks are a little different. 

You will be seeing blue with more green in it, more of a teal or the Tiffany’s Blue.  That color combination makes happy HAPPY happy!

Then there is the pink that I am seeing everywhere…more of a coral pink which I think is fabulous! I can’t tell you how many shops we went into and saw these color combos. 

Another color trend I am seeing is cool metallics, pewters, grey blues, copper, and dirty gold…Yum! Can you believe gold is back? I guess it’s time to buy more gold accessories!

This morning I was watching my local morning show and they were talking about color trends for 2007.  They said to look for bright fun and funky color. I am such an 80’s girl, so I am loving these fun combos! We are releasing a great new line at the CHA trade show at the end of this month that’s all about color, so keep your eyes out for it.

Get out there, look at color combos that inspire you, it’s amazing just how excited I get when I look at color! Head to Home Depot and browse through the new paint chips, take some home and hang them in your creative space! One of my favorite places to look at color is the Mac counter, I love to look at all the new eye shadow colors…Put some on your hand or treat yourself to one that makes you happy…Be creative with color!

I will always be a PINK girl, but trying new colors inspires me!

Consumer Show Schedule for 2007

One of the best parts about being in this industry is being able to go out and meet people.  It's such a thrill to be able to have the opportunity to help teach and learn from others.  For the past few months, we have been working hard to put together a schedule of events for 2007.  Our wonderful design team has done a fabulous job at coming up with our class content.  We are finally finished and so excited.  We will be using the latest product and newest techniques in all of our classes.  Here is a list of shows that we will be attending for 2007.  We hope to be able to meet for of you thoughout the this year!

Step-by-steps for MM Idol Project

Many of you remember Wilna Furstenburg from the MM Idol contest last October.  She created a beautiful home decor project which she combined an interesting mix of elements to display her favorite scrapbook art on her wall.  She received a lot of email inquiring how she created her project.  She has posted in on her blog and we wanted to also share, just in case you had questions also.

Weekly Challenge - Old Product New Use

For this weeks’ challenge, I thought it would be fun to find a new use for an old product (or two).  I love working with the latest and greatest scrapbooking products, but there’s also something extremely satisfying about taking an “old” favorite out of my stash and creating something completely new with it.  The screw-head snaps have always been one of my very favorite Making Memories products (they are really old!!) and another one of my favorite older products is the collection of sheer frames (no, they aren’t super old, but not the latest release either).  So I sat down with these products and a small unfinished shadow-box frame (from Provo Craft) I’ve been hanging on to. 

The project is really simple, but I am pleased with the results.  I think I may even try to find some more frames like this and create a little collage for the wall above Zach’s crib. 

Here’s a quick step-by-step of what I did:

1.  Paint frame and distress edges with MM sanding block – rub antiquing agent over the sanded edges (I used Old English furniture polish)

2.  Flatten the back of the snaps by using the setting tool

3.  Use a strong liquid adhesive to attach the snaps to the corners of the sheer frame

4.  Use the same adhesive to attach the sheer frame to the wood frame – be sure to put the adhesive directly behind the snaps so it doesn’t show too much

5.  Place a favorite photo in the frame

6.  Make a bunch more…because they were so quick and easy and cute! J

Holiday Photo Winner
